LADY MERCEDES, Cafe Drummond, Aberdeen SPORTING a look that's reminiscent of Supergrass's Gaz Coombes, frontman Brett McIntosh steers his band through the highways and byways of modern music. At times, he sings like Liam Gallagher might if he'd grown up within spitting distance of the Mississippi Delta. At others, his band swerves from sounding like Cream having a punch-up with Deep Purple to something that's not a million miles away from The Charlatans. Songs like Hey Alleycat and Shot Dead Boogie, meanwhile, are deep, rootsy, blues-inspired affairs that motor along. As you'd expect, they can play a bit too - guitarist Leigh Collingbourne delivers an astonishing solo on Disco Biscuit Dolly for example. On this evidence they've far outpaced 2004's Red Light Fever album. If I didn't know better, I'd swear that Aberdeen had a swamp; there is no other place that Lady Mercedes could have been born. Starting well with a groove and riff vaguely reminiscent of Stevie Wonder's "Superstition" and a voice that Steve Tyler would be proud of, these guys slither their way out of your speakers and demand that you shake that thang! |

A great night was had by all last night at Cellar Bar 8 in Cambridge. The first band, Krawdaddy, set the pace with a blinding set. And Aussie rockers Mayfield really fired us up. Headliners Free Will and the Bad Influences were every bit as good as their recording suggested and the tequila went down a treat. We're all looking forward to do it again. |
